UNCCD and IAEA Sign “Practical Arrangement”
18 April 2013: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed an agreement to collaborate on nuclear technologies to strengthen the assessment of soil erosion and monitor improvements over time.
The agreement, titled the "Practical Arrangement," was signed by UNCCD Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja and Ana Claudia Raffo-Caiado, Director of the IAEA's Division of Technical Cooperation Programme Support and Coordination (TCPC). It was signed on the sidelines of the eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11).
The Practical Arrangement will run until 31 December 2017. It seeks to promote the enhanced conservation of land and soil resources for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, and to support the health and productivity of drylands. The two organizations are expected to exchange and disseminate information, and participate in relevant scientific networks and activities as well as joint educational and training courses.
